Find the home gym that fits your needs!

There can be a lot of confusion when first choosing a home gym.  The key is to find a home gym that suites your needs, but without wasting your time or money.  We will briefly go over important features when choosing a home gym:

Does it meet your goals?

Each gym has specific features that will help you achieve certain results.  If you’re looking to build up your muscles to a bodybuilder like body, you will want to look into getting a plate loaded machine or even a leverage machine.  Powertec is an excellent brand that manufactures those types of machines.

If you’re looking to tone up, burn fat/calories, a power rod machine like Bowflex is an excellent choice.

Does it fit your workout area?

Gyms come in a lot of different shapes and sizes.  Finding one that fits isn’t always easy especially if you have a smaller workout area such as an apartment.  Make a note of the length, width and height of the room and where you plan to put the gym.  When viewing the footprints of gyms, add 2 to 3 feet on each side to make sure you have ample room to maneuver around the gym.

Is it lightweight and easy to move?

If you live in an apartment or condo, you probably won’t have a lot of room for a home gym.  Some gyms, like the Bowflex machines, allow you to move the gym if necessary, when it’s not in use.  That will give you that space back when the gym is not in use, and you can move it against the wall, in a closet, or under your bed.

How many exercises does it provide?

When fist starting out as a beginner, the number of exercises won’t matter as much as long as your working your chest, shoulders, back, and legs.  As you gain experience, you may consider purchasing a machine that will offer more exercises as it will challenge you, and prevent your body from adapting to your workout.

Does it provide enough weight resistance?

200 pounds of resistance will seem like more than enough resistance when first starting out.  But, as you gain strength, you can either increase your repetitions, or add more weight.  It would be a good idea to check and see if the manufacturer offers added weight so you can add it if you need to in the future.

Does it have a cardio station?

A lot of gyms out there will have a cardio station such as a row machine.  Even if the gym you purchase doesn’t include one, be sure to add cardio to your workout another way, either by purchasing additional equipment, or by playing sports, running, or swimming.

How about the warranty?

A good warranty will could give you an idea on the quality of the machine.  Bowflex offers a year on parts and labor, and a lifetime on the power rods.  If the machine runs on a digital system, check the warranty on it and make sure it is a good one.  If the digital system breaks after the warranty, it could be costly to get it fixed or replaced.

Final thought...

That should give you a pretty good idea about what features to look for when going out to purchase a new home gym.  Above, we offer some great home gyms that may fit your needs, and some in-depth information about them.
